The Grapevine (4/28/17): American Nightmare of Honor

Good morning, and this is your daily Grapevine! This section of Smark Henry is where we round up all the founded and unfounded rumors abound the pro wrestling scene that you may have missed over the evening.

We have some updates on which promotion Cody Rhodes plans to makes his home:

    • Cody Rhodes is expected to sign somewhat exclusively with Ring of Honor. There's no formal announcement just yet, but he had expressed a desire to settle with one home promotion, and the rumors are strongly suggesting that it will be with ROH. Signing with ROH as a home base would still allow him to work NJPW, and any other American promotion that does not have a TV show. He's apparently done working for TNA as well. The restrictions of this new deal rule out Impact, Lucha Underground, and most of the big American indies except PWG. He will also still be able to sell merchandise through Pro Wrestling Tees and handle his own outside bookings as long as they're not in conflict with ROH dates. This deal is similar to the one the Young Bucks have with ROH. (Source: Wrestling Inc)

We say: Good move to sign with Ring of Honor, giving him the most flexibility to work all around the world while having a stable deal. Pro wrestling has come quite the long way from the loose monopoly WWE enjoyed a decade ago, but granted, it's easier for a big star like Cody to get a deal he wants.

    • There's more being uncovered about the issues Mauro Ranallo had with WWE, and it seems that even Vince McMahon was not a fan. Vince signed Mauro so that SmackDown Live can have a "different feel" from RAW, and after a while he quickly wanted Mauro to sound more like Michael Cole. Adding Tom Philips to the announce team was the first apparent sign of Vince's displeasure with Mauro's work. (Source: WON)

We say: Told you it had to come from the top, and that this is the exact reason why JBL's behavior was tolerated. The Tom move was weird, though, as they never really managed to get him to mess with the play-by-play, just with segues. But Vince McMahon needs to be taken to task even more so than JBL here.
