#ThrowbackThursday (2/9/17): When Regal Exposed Goldberg

In less than a month, Goldberg will be challenging Kevin Owens at Fastlane for the WWE Universal Championship. That's also Vince's shorthand for Goldberg will be making Kevin Owens go down like a punk in record time to take the belt. If you're a regular reader of this site, then you're probably the type to be up in arms over the Goldberg/Owens deal, and for good reason.

We get it. Goldberg is still a big fucking deal, and his championship reign and subsequent WrestleMania match with Brock Lesnar is surely bringing in casuals and returning fans to boost 'Mania sales. We get it, Vince. You'll win that battle. But today, we'll win this one.

You see, on this day 19 years ago, good ol' Bill looked like a complete jabroni while in the midst of his legendary undefeated streak in WCW. About 30 matches into his streak, he was booked to face a certain Steven Regal in a competitive five-minute match instead of his usual 90-second squash. Apparently, Goldberg had a bad case of stage fright, which meant Regal had to wrestle himself into chains, exposing Goldberg's lack of wrestling ability in the process.

This supposedly caused some huge backstage heat on Regal, as the agent who told both men to put on an extended battle never cleared this with Eric Bischoff. Easy-E, who was head showrunner at the time, was understandably pretty miffed over his red-hot new monster being "made to look foolish" on live TV, in his words.

You can watch it in all of its cringeworthy glory right here:

Goldberg would later argue that Regal took liberties with him and gave him a stiff kick to the head, something even casual viewers will be able to notice through the match. Around 4-5 months later, Regal would be fired from WCW over drug use.

If you want to hear Regal's side of the story in full, he actually discusses this on the Steve Austin Show, which you can hear below:

Fast forward to today and William Regal is one of the most beloved legends in the industry, while continuing to play the role of NXT's General Manager. And Bill Goldberg is on his way to becoming the next WWE Universal Champion at the ripe old age of 50.

While we're all pissed at the fact that Owens is going to get squashed by Goldberg, let's all remember that for one night, a chunky, scrappy, hard-nosed Brit made Bill Goldberg look like a complete idiot. It's not the victory we wanted, but it's a victory we'll happily take for now.
