If there's one thing worse than envy, it's betrayal.
Current PHX Champion Main Maxx—and the longest-reigning one, as he gleefully reminds us every chance he gets—puts his prized white-and-gold belt on the line against his former brother-in-arms Peter Versoza in a match just announced by the Philippine Wrestling Revolution. This match will take place on Sunday, January 29, at PWR Live: Bagong Yugto.
Versoza, if you'll recall, used to run interference with Maxx as part of the Royal Flush, the most dominant stable Filipino pro wrestling has seen. But that's all in the past now, after the self-titled "Bulacan Babe Magnet" dropped his former comrade with a vicious Petegree at PWR Live: Suplex Sunday, moments after a grueling title defense by Maxx against the gifted SANDATA.
This betrayal has been in the works for months. Astute fans will recall how Main Maxx first stepped in Versoza's path at Renaissance 2016. The brash high-flyer was in the process of laying a post-match beatdown on Crystal, who had unsuccessfully challenged for the PHX Championship that night, but earned Maxx's respect in the process. It seems that Versoza's Suplex Sunday assault stems from frustration over that incident.
Of course, nobody ever blamed Maxx for being the kind of guy who just turns the other cheek. Later that same evening, he himself interfered in Versoza's singles match with Crystal, dropping him with a thunderous Blitzkrieg Bomb to seal an embarrassing upset loss for the cocky P to the V.
Now it looks as if tensions have come to a boil, as both men throw the gauntlet down with PHX glory at stake. Versoza, of course, remains to be the only long-term Royal Flush member never to have held championship gold, and you know that's got to be eating him up.
And frankly, Peter Versoza is building up a bit of a reputation as a turncoat, first forcing the breakup of the popular Dual Shock tag team in 2015 by betraying SANDATA, followed by this explosive twist.
Will Maxx extend his run as PWR's most dominant champion, or will Peter Versoza finally hit a gold rush of his own? Let us know your predictions, and we'll see you on the 29th!
