#MustWatchMonday (1/30/17): The Greatest Royal Rumble of All Time

Today marks the day of the 2017 Royal Rumble. As everyone knows, the match is a battle royale, starting off with two competitors, with a new wrestler coming in every minute. Wrestlers lose when they are tossed over the top rope, and the last man standing is the winner of the match. Traditionally, the winner of the Royal Rumble is guaranteed a title shot at WrestleMania.

The premise of the match was supposed to be that anyone could win it, and that unpredictability was its main drawing point. But despite having 30 wrestlers in the match, the Royal Rumble has suffered a fundamental problem the past few years: the winners of the match were entirely predictable. Even if you couldn't pinpoint a single winner, you could tell that there were only three or four guys in the ring who actually had a shot of winning the entire match.

That's what makes this year special. Due to a combination of the brand split, the return of multiple nostalgia acts, and the need to establish some marquee matchups for WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble line up for this year is stacked. When your match has at least 10-15 guys who have some chance of winning, you can really get excited about watching, and you know you'll be on the edge of your seat.

I felt like I had to preface with that, because this Rumble potentially has the chance to be as good as the Rumble some consider to be the best of all time, that being the Royal Rumble from 1992. This Rumble was for the then vacant WWF Championship, instead of being for a title shot at WrestleMania. That alone makes it stand out from the other Rumbles. And because of the stakes involved in this match, the star power they brought to it was amazing. It featured the likes of the Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Roddy Piper, Jake Roberts, the British Bulldog, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, the eventual winner Ric Flair, and so many more.

I won't explain the match spot for spot. It was really well worked though, and each wrestlers' character motivations shined through. For example, one of the prevailing storylines for this match was "No one likes Ric Flair." All that being said, give this a watch, it's definitely worth your time, and it gives you a chance to see all your favorite WWE legends in a single match.

Despite being a huge fan of Japanese wrestling, he still holds a soft spot in his heart for WWE's Kane. He's good for recommending matches from pretty much anywhere, whether it be Japan, Europe, the US or Mexico. He'd be ecstatic if you watched Dragon Gate though.
