Smark Hen-XT (8/24/16): An Ode to Bayley

This week, we’re back in Brooklyn for a couple of matches and a recap of TakeOver: Brooklyn. Also, NXT says goodbye to Bayley.

Much had been said about how Bayley was the heart and soul of NXT. But as the Hugster had been called up this past Monday on RAW, the yellow brand gives us a poignant video package to say farewell to one of the people responsible for making NXT what it is today.

Bayley’s essay may be a bit overplayed, but it does encapsulate her passion for the industry and her career so far. She really does love her job, and you can see it in the work she’s put in. She’s the purest babyface in the industry, with her infectious positivity that makes even the coldest of hearts melt. Everything about her makes you want to cheer for her so hard.

She’s on RAW now, and I couldn’t be happier. She’s earned this spot, just like she earned her run at the top of NXT. She has what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage of the industry, and trust me, she will. The NXT faithful will always be grateful for what she did to the brand. You go, girl, and hug the world.

    The Rest of the Show:

    Tye Dillinger def. Wesley Blake

    • Big pops from Brooklyn as the Perfect 10 picked up the win with the Tye Breaker, a fireman’s carry neckbreaker.

    • It’s refreshing to see Dillinger play a pure babyface here. He was over as fuck in Brooklyn, and I’d love to see him be given a solid run. He’s been here for a long time, and he’s been entertaining. He deserves a little love.

    • Blake, on the other hand, continues to flounder after breaking up with tag team partner Buddy Murphy. Not sure what he can do to build himself up again, but he has to do something fast. He might end up getting the pink slip if he doesn’t.

The Authors of Pain (w/ Paul Ellering) def. TM61

    • The newly named Akam and Rezar dominated the Australian duo and got the win after the Legsweep-Lariat combination.

    • Holy shit, the Authors of Pain are fun to watch. They might be new, but they know how to destroy people. Ellering managing them adds to their already menacing figure. Big things are in store for these big guys.

    • TM61 had a great match, but you can see that they weren’t winning this. They showcased a lot of athleticism and resilience, but this was all to highlight the AoP’s strengths. I’m not too bothered to see them taking the defeat. They’re a veteran team with legit indy creds, and beating them ups the stock of their opponents. I just hope this isn’t their ceiling, though. They have a lot more to offer to the NXT Tag Team division, and they just need the time to showcase their skills and develop their gimmick.

For a recap episode, this wasn’t bad. We got two entertaining matches out of it, and as always, the video packages were spot on. It does whet my appetite for the coming episodes while letting me ride out that high from a great TakeOver. Next week might be the start of a new era for NXT, but as for this episode, it gets a B.
