The NXT Grapevine, July 2016: No Sleep Till Brooklyn

Another set of tapings for NXT took place earlier today, and once again, we've got a preview of things for you here! With NXT Takeover: Brooklyn on the horizon, these episodes are sure to build up towards NXT's next big event, so let's see how the card will shape up in the weeks to come.

And of course, our usual SPOILER WARNING goes here. This post is dark and full of spoilers, so turn back now if you don't want to know what happens!

    Airing July 27:
    • Shinsuke Nakamura def. Wesley Blake. NXT GM William Regal came out afterwards and announced Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe for the NXT Championship at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn!
    • Billie Kay def. Santana Garrett
    • TM 61 (Nick Miller and Shane Thorne) def. Rob Ryzin and Nailz
    • No Way Jose def. Steve Cutler. Jose cut a promo on Austin Aries afterwards.
    • Kota Ibushi def. Buddy Murphy in Ibushi's NXT debut match
    • NXT Champion Samoa Joe came out and said that Nakamura does not deserve a shot. William Regal came out and told him that the match will happen or else Joe loses by forfeit, and Shinsuke Nakamura followed to stare Joe down.

Thoughts: KOTA IBUSHI MAKES HIS DEBUT! Damn, with the Cruiserweight Classic ongoing many expected that he'll debut after the tournament, but it looks like we'll be getting him much earlier than that. Meanwhile, Nakamura's making the most of his time in NXT so far, since he's already challenging for the NXT Championship in what is only his third NXT Takeover match. Then again, was anyone really surprised?

Oh, and this question is just begging to be asked: how is Rob Ryzin related to Terra Ryzing?

    Airing August 3:
    • Hideo Itami def. Sean Maluta
    • Asuka def. Aliyah via submission. Asuka did not let go of the hold after the match, prompting Bayley to run into the ring for the save.
    • Bobby Roode makes his NXT debut and declares himself the new face of NXT. He then trashes the Full Sail crowd and calls them losers.
    • NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival (Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson) def. TM 61 (Nick Miller and Shane Thorne). Afterwards, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa came out to challenge The Revival for the championships.

Thoughts: Ibushi one week, Bobby Roode the next! It seems like he'll be playing the, uh, rude jackass he used to be in TNA, which should make for some fun television. Gargano and Ciampa in the tag team championship scene is a nice touch, and should continue the buildup these two are getting now with the Cruiserweight Classic. Asuka vs. Bayley was something we knew was coming, with our champion continuing to look more terrifying by the week.

    Airing August 10:
    • Chris Atkins vs. Mojo Rawley never happens as Samoa Joe came out and destroyed both men.
    • Bayley and NXT Women's Champion Asuka had their contract signing for NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.
    • The Authors of Pain (Sunny Dhinsa and Gzim Selmani) def. Rob Ryzin and Nailz. TM 61 came out for the save, but were also beaten down. American Alpha (Chad Gable and Jason Jordan) then ran down to make the save.
    • Andrade "Cien" Almas def. Angelo Dawkins. Bobby Roode came out afterwards, setting up Roode vs. Almas at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.
    • Billie Kay def. Liv Morgan
    • Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano def. Patrick Clark and Tucker Knight
    • Hideo Itami def. Mustafa Ali
    • Nikki Storm, Liv Morgan and Carmella def. Alexa Bliss, Mandy Rose and Daria Benerato
    • Samoa Joe def. Mojo Rawley. Afterwards, Shinsuke Nakamura came out to confront Joe, but the two were separated by security.

Thoughts: Joe's back to killing random people, which seems to be his default course of action whenever things don't go his way. Almas vs. Roode is a surprising, yet welcome addition to Brooklyn—we know these two can go, and it'll be interesting to see how their respective styles will clash. It's also great to see Hideo Itami back, and while he hasn't been booked for anything at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn, expect to see him do something relevant sooner rather than later.

Also, yes, this episode seems to be more stacked than others. That looks like too much for a one-hour show, so expect some of these matches to be cut. That's often the case with tapings, as they sometimes shoot things out of order.

Whew, that was a lot  to take in, wasn't it? Here's what the card for NXT Takeover: Brooklyn looks like after these set of tapings:

    • NXT Championship Match: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe (c)
    • NXT Women's Championship Match: Bayley vs. Asuka (c)
    • NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa vs. The Revival (c)
    • Bobby Roode vs. Andrade "Cien" Almas
Expect other matches to be added to the card as we usually have 5-6 matches for Takeover shows. No Way Jose vs. Austin Aries looks likely, as is as another tag match involving the Authors of Pain

What do you think, fellas? Is NXT Takeover: Brooklyn going to be lit, or does it get a big S-A-W-F-T from you? How much are you looking forward to these debuts and matches? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
