#MustWatchMonday (7/25/16): The First Shield Triple Threat

Once upon a time, NXT was a faux reality show designed to find the next WWE superstar, and wasn't Triple H's vanity promotion, or WWE's developmental territory. From 2007 up until 2012, that particular honor went to a promotion known as Florida Championship Wrestling. Some of WWE's biggest names came up from this territory, names you might recognize such as Alberto del Rio, Sheamus, Cesaro, Big E, Kofi Kingston, and many more.

Today, we'll be focusing on three of the most important names that came up through this system: Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Leakee (who now goes by Roman Reigns). Earlier at Battleground, these three men faced off against one another for the WWE Championship, a dream match fantasized about by wrestling fans since the debut of the Shield.

What if I told you the match already happened before today though?

The match indeed did happen, and it happened in FCW, on January 12, 2012, only 10 months before the Shield would make their memorable debut at that year's Survivor Series. Instead of fighting for the WWE Championship however, what was at stake in this match was a number one contendership opportunity for the FCW Florida Heavyweight Title, which was held at the time by a man called Leo Kruger (you may know him as the currently future endeavored party animal Adam Rose).

The match shows the Shield in a different light, with Dean Ambrose acting more like his independent persona Jon Moxley, Seth Rollins being the mega babyface, and Roman Reigns wrestling without a combat vest. The triple threat match is simple, and definitely didn't make any match of the year lists, but comparing this match to the match the three had today at Battleground is a testament to how far all three men have gone, from wrestling in a small factory in front of a few hundred people, to consistently main eventing WWE PPVs and being counted on to carry the company to new heights.

What do you think of the match? Leave a comment below!

Brandon Sy is a PhD student in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics currently based in Sydney. Since he wasn't allowed to watch wrestling as a kid, he's been overcompensating ever since. Despite being a huge fan of Japanese wrestling, he still holds a soft spot in his heart for WWE's Kane. He's good for recommending matches from pretty much anywhere, whether it be Japan, Europe, the US or Mexico. He'd be ecstatic if you watched Dragon Gate though.
