Just when you thought spring cleaning season was pretty much on cruise control, beloved WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes (also currently known as Stardust) has announced on Twitter that he had just asked for his release from the company.
Yesterday, he tweeted the following, possibly as a prelude to his shocking announcement:
Helluva' day— Hyrule Husky (@PrinceCGR) May 21, 2016
Helluva' day...but tomorrow is gonna' be even more stressful I think
Wish me luck
And 10 hours ago, he dropped the bomb:
(1/2) The past ten years have been quite the trek, but as of earlier today I have asked for my release from @WWE— Hyrule Husky (@PrinceCGR) May 21, 2016
(2/2) I'll speak further on the matter shortly. Thank you to all the pro-wrestling/sports entertainment fans worldwide. Thank you— Hyrule Husky (@PrinceCGR) May 21, 2016
That's when the levees broke. A few hours after the announcement, Cody's SummerSlam opponent and Arrow star Stephen Amell tweeted his support and gratitude to Cody for making one of his dreams come true.
Thinking of my good friend @PrinceCGR today. Whatever's next, he will excel. Cody: Thanks for taking me on a grand adventure!— Stephen Amell (@StephenAmell) May 21, 2016
Cody's yet to explain the full details of his decision, but if we were to guess, it would have something to do with the WWE mishandling his Stardust character (alongside a lot of his previous work). We agree that the character isn't for everyone in this day and age—with a lot of people clamoring for him to drop it after his father Dusty Rhodes's death—but it truly could've been something big given the way Cody poured a lot more effort into trying to make it work and raising the bar for character acting in a place full of lackluster gimmicks.
With the right writing, Stardust could've been a true comic book villain (or hero), but Creative clearly never thought much of it. They couldn't even give him and his brother Goldust a proper feud, and it looks like we're not gonna get that huge WrestleMania match in the foreseeable future.
Godspeed, Cody, and we're with you to your future endeavors. Let's take a look back at a few highlights of his WWE career.
What do you think of this news? Did Cody make the right decision in leaving, or are you happy to see the back of Stardust? Let's talk about it in the comments!
