The Super J Cup Is Back

There's some big news coming out of today, the first day of this year's New Japan Cup: Bushiroad president Takaaki Kidani has announced that NJPW is bringing back the Super J Cup.

For those who don't know what this is, the Super J Cup an irregular tournament featuring the best junior heavyweight wrestlers all over the world. It's featured legends like Chris Benoit (the first-ever Super J Cup winner in 1994), Chris Jericho, Jushin Thunder Liger (winner of the 1995 and 2000 tournaments), Naomichi Marufuji (winner of the 2004 and 2009 tournaments), The Great Sasuke, Hayabusa, Taka Michinoku, and younger icons like Kota Ibushi and Finn Balor.

The following promotions are scheduled to take part:

    • NJPW
    • Ring of Honor
    • CMLL
    • NOAH (Naomichi Marufuji)
    • Dragon Gate
    • Suzukigun
    • ZERO1
    • K-DOJO (Taka Michinoku)

We figure this is NJPW's way of recouping their huge losses earlier this year in the departures of Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Doc Gallows.

The last tournament was held back in 2009, and saw Marufuji defeat Prince Devitt in the finals. We'll keep you updated with more information as it's made available.

In other news, Kidani also announced that Michael Elgin and Katsuyori Shibata have been signed to new NJPW contracts.
