Heavy Impact (3/31/16): Filler Filler Chicken Dinner

THIS WEEK ON IMPACT WRESTLING! Jeff Hardy has his title match, and... Gail Kim organizes another #1 contenders match for the Knockouts Championship? EC3/Matt Hardy/Mike Bennett continues! Where is it all going?

    Much ado about nothing

Here's the problem when you don't have a monthly PPV to build up to: you need to make sure your weekly episodic television is really good and riveting. We're all used to the paradigm WWE has created (and others have followed) that we expect arcs to follow the same pattern—build for three to four weeks, and either move on to the next chapter or wrap the story up at the big event.

Even though shows like Lucha Underground get it right by always keeping the story moving in a nice way, it's still weird to see the wrestling story float in and out of arcs without huge punctuations. That's why LU works hard, because it knows it only gets one big event, and that's the season finale. TNA knows this with Impact Wrestling as well, but because it's TNA and the writing is nowhere near the level of the El Rey original, filler episodes look even more like what they are, making the company seem meandering.

The story is moving, but I feel no sense of urgency. TNA World Heavyweight Champion Drew Galloway, who's the best champion they've already had in a long time, beat Jeff Hardy today, and although his feud with Matt Hardy is only a couple of weeks old, the battles they've had since then and Matt's insistence on the World Title scene make it seem like they've been fighting forever.

Maybe I'm just not in the mood to rate Impact Wrestling well right now, but this really just felt like a running-in-place episode. There's just too much focus on the top guys—the entire first segment, which includes a promo and two matches, ran for at least 20 minutes without commercials—and the undercard is a little too unexciting. The X Division champion, Trevor Lee, made his first appearance in a long time, but there was no X Division match. Bobby Lashley vs. Pope doesn't really interest me. The main event was good, but it was just that.

This company really needs some of its stars back.

    Minor impacts

    • The Eddie Edwards/Shane Helms/Trevor Lee angle is something that should be interesting me, but I hate the American Wolves and while Helms is definitely charismatic, I hate listening to him talk. It's nice to see that they're trying to do something with Eddie while Davey is away.
    • When the Bro Mans are your best contenders in the tag division, you know you need to sign new talent. And when your best free agency pickup are the two individuals formerly known as the Legionnaires in NXT, you know you have to look harder.
    • Let's fucking get rid of the King of the Mountain title already.
    • The Al Snow angle with Grado is actually interesting.
    • The Knockouts title #1 contendership situation is intriguing, but did they really have to complicate it like this?
