31 Days of Wrestling (12/15/15): Pentagon, Jr. vs. Vampiro, Cero Miedo Match

We're almost halfway through the month of December and our 31 Days of Wrestling series! Today, we go back to the Temple in Boyle Heights, California to revisit one of the most brutally twisted matches we've had all year.

#15: Pentagon, Jr. vs. Vampiro in a Cero Miedo Match at Ultima Lucha

Throughout the first season of Lucha Underground, Pentagon, Jr.'s arc revolved around his quest to obey his unseen master. Dubbing himself as one without fear, he would eschew title opportunities, instead focusing on bringing destruction and madness to the Temple by breaking the arms of those unlucky enough to step inside the ring with him. Among his targets were the likes of Famous B—whose reason for fame continues to elude us—Ricky Mandel, Argenis, even female charcters like Sexy Star and Mellisa Santos, the ring announcer.

Vampiro, the lucha libre legend who hasn't had a match in almost a decade, had spent virtually the entire season on color commentary alongside Matt Striker. He would insert himself into Lucha Underground canon by saving Sexy Star from Pentagon, Jr.'s vicious assault, earning the ire of Pentagon, Jr. in the process.

For weeks, Pentagon, Jr. would taunt Vampiro into coming out of retirement, even going to lengths such as to call out the man by his real name and to threaten to burn him. That opened the door for Ian Hodgkinson to unleash the demon living within named Vampiro. Vamp would answer Pentagon, Jr.'s challenge for a match at the season finale of Lucha Underground, Ultima Lucha, and it was nothing short of a glorious trainwreck.

From the moment Vampiro first appears in his Pope of Violence outfit, you just know crazy shit is about to go down, and both guys don't waste any time laying into one another. Not many people know that while the televised match lasted a little less than 17 minutes, the real match went over half an hour during the Ultima Lucha taping. Vampiro told "Stone Cold" Steve Austin on the latter's podcast that he and Pentagon, Jr. had just hit quite the groove and felt like they could exceed their time limit since the show would be pre-taped anyway. It was also Vamp's way of paying it forward in the business to put over a new star in Pentagon, Jr.

The match itself was a sadist's dream with all sorts of weapons being introduced from the "sharp little daggers" that Matt Striker used to describe thumbtacks, to a flaming table, to the creation of one Agapito Flores—the flourescent lamp. But while all of these weapons would be enough to elicit a "HOLY SHIT!" chant or two, the real WTF moment came at the end when Pentagon, Jr.'s master finally revealed himself, effectively bringing Pentagon, Jr.'s arc full circle by season's end.

The Cero Miedo match was a masterpiece only Lucha Underground could deliver; and it laid the groundwork for an intriguing narrative surrounding Vampiro and Pentagon, Jr. as we approach season 2, which premieres on January 27 in the U.S.
